The Steamer Story

North Shore Shellfish prides itself in being one of the largest wholesale distributors of the Long Island Steamer.

We buy high quality softshell clams that are hand dug from the tidal flats of Long Island. Our company can purchase up to 25,000lbs of this species on a weekly basis. This product is harvested by over a hundred experienced diggers, then cleaned and packaged for transport. Our product is shipped all over the world. During the summer months a moderate percentage is distributed throughout Long Island, consisting of Montauk, The Hamptons and ranging all the way to Manhattan.

Furthermore, North Shore Shellfish, Inc. has built very strong relationships with large distributors in the North East. Our company ships thousands of pounds weekly to shucking plants where these clams undergo a very unique process. These clams actually take a bath in boiling water for 3 seconds and then are dipped in frigid iced cold water. From that moment on the clams are delicately removed from their shells and placed in containers for shipment. They are distributed to restaurants all over the world where they are dipped in milk or a specific batter, then fried and served as a delicious Clam Roll.
